Week 8

In class we discussed the this archetype for the head of the household. And all of this male characters who fit this description. In this archetype of a character we then discussed the three stages that they must go through, for heroes such as Telemachus. we learn some information about the story in the future such as the fact that when Odysseus and Telemachus return to their home and want to kill their handmaidens Telemachus will be the one to choose their death and kill them in a very gruesome way that Odysseus did not suggest which will be his first time making his own decision

I have started book 3, where they have finally reached Pylos, I would’ve thought that the story would spend a lot of time with Telemachus journey on the ship and crossing the sea, but I guess not. Telemachus called Athena his “mentor” ad I find that so sweet, she is really taking care of him. I find it funny that Nestor’s little old self just always seem to be goo, he has never been i danger (to me) and now he is one of the few Achaians who got to go back home and live their life peacefully. Like Telemachus and Orestes, a lot of action and fantasy movies have this theme or plot of “I’m going to avenge my father!” and I wonder if this was the first story for that and started that classic story line, that I’ve watched so many movies about before. Nestor is taking good care of Telemachus with the help of Athena. Not many interesting things happened in that book for me.

Now moving on to book 4, which is very long (I don’t like that). This plot reminds me of so many adventure plots and movies that I’ve seen before and where they stop and check on old comrades and they’re all in different stages of their life. Menelaus is celebrating his daughter’s wedding. Surprisingly he’s still with trifling Helen, I don’t know why he would still want to be with her?!? Now, in a way, I am being misogynistic because all the men in the ancient Greek world get to sleep with as many women as they want, and get away with it, but something about the way Helen plays innocent gets on my nerves. But hey, she is a powerful female character throughout these epic poems. Helen threw a drug into there, and I don’t know if they wanted her to do that or if she w as trying to sneak it in onto them.
