Who Is The Audience in a Worship Service?

The answer might surprise you

As I participated in my worship service last Sunday on YouTube, the order of service proceeded normally. We sang. We confessed our sins aloud and silently.

Normally after the silent confession, the worship leader reads the Assurance of Pardon aloud. But this week as he introduced it, he said: “This is such a great passage that if I were in the audience, I’d want to be saying it, too, so let’s read it together.” You can see it below.

He and the other people with guitars were standing facing the rest of us in the congregation. (To make things simple I will refer to him as simply WL for Worship Leader to protect his identity.) Let’s look once again at one of his statements. I verified I’d heard it right by replaying it from YouTube and writing it down.

When I heard those words something jarred me. I wondered, “Is that what he really thinks and it slipped out?” Does he really think we are the audience? Does that mean he thinks that he and the others up there are performing for the rest of us?
