My Universe Is Askew
A poem
My universe is askew
Why can’t anyone see it?
Why can’t anyone feel it?
Like a ship at sea
Rolling with every wave
Like a drunken hobo
Who cannot find footing
Every single movement
Crashing into something
My universe is askew
How could I stop rolling?
How could I find footing?
Everything is changing
I am the universe, flourishing
Everything is suffering
I am the universe, dissolving
Every single moment
Ticking away in my mind
My universe is askew
Should I stop fighting it?
Should I surrender to it?
Surrendering to nothing
And in nothing find everything
Surrendering to everything
And in everything find nothing
In this surrendering, forget the self
And be enlightened by myriad things
The last two lines of this poem are inspired by Dogen Zenji’s Genjo Koan.
