Emerging Culture

Contemporary emerging culture often looks like it is all about forgetting. It flourishes beyond the purview of the city’s museum and well-known galleries, known mostly to itself while engaging in the pursuit of something larger. In Paris, the art of emerging artists is frequently selected for brand collaborations, whereas New York City has had fewer offerings for lesser-known artists.

In France, as in Germany, art remains a significant presence in daily life so that there are always several effective avenues to connect the general public to emerging art. The Salon de Montrouge, for instance, presents new work each year by the most viable young artists in Paris. The gallery program of L’Association Premier Regard is similar, introducing a selection of outstanding emerging artists by hosting a number exhibitions throughout the year.

New York City’s art non-profits such as the College Art Association, Creative Time and NEW, Inc. have also stood out as strong cultivators of emerging art. However their outreach is limited, highlighting the fact that the innovative exhibition program that had been founded by Alanna Heiss at PS 1 has yet to be either matched or surpassed.
