O Argumento da Criatura

Era uma noite fria de junho e o vento sacudia com violência as árvores que rodeavam a casa de Pedro, zumbindo fortemente pelas frestas das portas e janelas. A chuva já havia cessado há pouco; mas o…

Living alone and thriving during the pandemic

They say that you feel as alone as your internal need for social contact. This means not everyone living alone feels lonely. I would imagine that not everyone who lives alone is doing by choice, some are probably not very happy about wether for the pressures of society or because they would prefer having someone in their daily lives.

Being in social isolation is a challenging moment for people that like me to live alone. Not completely alone in my case because I have a dog. It is challenging because I would rely on the outside world for social interaction to keep me sane. Now we have an online connection with friends and family.

The biggest skill for the next years will be to learn to enjoy your own company. To be okay with being alone with your thoughts.

In my case because I work from home, and online I am already used to spend a lot of time on my own and at home. So in terms of work experience, it didn’t change that much. It’s hard for me to relate to others who are used to have a more social and out of the house, so I will not pronounce myself too much on this front.

What I can share is what I believe I have been doing before all this happened in the last 5 years that allows me to stay centered and calm during these uncertain times.

1- Doing therapy every week and this has set a strong foundation for my mental health.

2- Practice meditation regularly.

3- Spending a lot of time on my own at home, working, reading, studying and writing.

4- Connecting deeply with my closest friends and staying in touch also online with the ones that live far away.

5- Traveling and gathering amazing memories of friends and places.

6- Exercising, in this case, Pilates and a bit of Yoga.

7- Walking my dog every day in the morning, afternoon and evening. (I must do it because I don’t have a garden).

8- Eating healthy, even though I was a vegetarian for 15 years, I allow some small portions of fish and meat on my meal, but very little, being mostly vegetables based meals.

9- And probably the most important sleep well. Go to bed every day at the same time and waking
