How Are Electric Cars Better Than Traditional Engine Cars?

You might have heard of Tesla Motors. An American car manufacturer is known for its electric cars. Tesla is the leader in electric cars and has alerted many other car manufacturers, due to which we’re seeing an increase in research of electric cars.

But why? Why are electric cars gaining more popularity? What makes them better than a traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Car? Is electric the future?

You probably know how a traditional fuel-powered car works. You do an exothermic reaction between petrol and oxygen. As a result, you get Carbon Dioxide, water, and some torque. Yes, it’s much more complicated than I’ve explained it here, but at its core, that’s how an engine works. This reaction causes a sort of an explosion that pushes the pistons down, this causes a linear movement of the piston which is then converted into circular motion.

How a traditional engine works.

You can see above how a basic engine functions. For converting linear motion into circular motion you need a lot of things like counterweights for balancing and others for a smooth process. One thing to notice here is the number of moving parts.

The functioning doesn’t end here, once the circular motion is produced it is transferred to the wheels through a transmission to give more torque or speed to the wheels. The transmission is another big complicated thing with a lot of moving parts.

Well, an electric car is much simpler compared to this. Instead of chemical reactions, an electric car uses electricity to power it up. There is a battery that stores the current, and then there’s a motor to spin the wheels. You give current to the motor, and off it goes!
