One Zero One Two Eight

As I frantically searched
Through murky waters
For myself in the mirror,
For the girl roughhoused by the city,
Unraveled like a ball of yarn,
Turned inside out,
Wrung and hung to dry
Over and over again
In the infinite pool of the sea;
Feeling sharp ice-cold currents
Ravage through my being relentlessly,
I sank to the bottom of the ocean floor
Like forgotten wreckage,
Only to hear my reflection whisper
Clear and sure into the sharp stillness:

“You do not have to wait for
Turbid waters to settle
To see me clearly; I am always with you.”

And so, in waters warm enough
To wear like second skin,
I breathe in lungfuls of myself
And finally give in
To blissful rest.
